Happy Halloween!
Street closures:
The Village of Trumansburg will close the following streets to vehicular traffic from 5-8pm on Halloween
(Thursday, Oct. 31):
Bradley, Washington, and Congress Streets- from McLallen St. to Seneca Rd.
South Street- from Main St. to Camp St.
• Whig Street- from Truman St. to Elm St.
• Larch mont/Ta ma rack- from South St. to Pennsylvania Ave.
For more information, contact the Village office at 607-387-6501.
WOOLLYBEAR FACTS:
From NYS DEC Facebook page:
The Isabella tiger moth (Pyrrharctia Isabella) aka "woollybear" is native to North America and can be
found throughout the US into Southern Canada. They have two generations per year and spend the
winter frozen solid as caterpillars. They produce a substance called cryoprotectant that prevents the
inside of their cells from freezing, allowing them to survive the winter and thaw out in the spring. They
have a very generalist diet and feed on a wide variety of herbaceous plants and tree foliage but aren't
considered pests. Woollybears are not classified as a threatened species but there is concern that the
warming climate may disrupt their life cycle in the future and cause population decline.
FUN FACT: Folklore describes the length of the brown band as a prediction on the severity of the
upcoming winter. It is said that the wider the brown band is, the more mild the winter will be. Although
the variation on band size depends on a number of factors and generally lengthens with age, there may
be a hint of truth to the folklore. High precipitation lengthens the black bands and an early onset winter
will push younger instar (between molts) caterpillars into hibernation, ultimately making darker
woollybears leading into a severe winter.
DOG LICENSING:
Did you know that NYS law requires that every dog over four months old be licensed in the municipality
in which it resides? Proof of unexpired rabies vaccination is also required.
Only towns and cities license dogs (not counties or villages). Town of Ulysses residents (including Village
of Trumansburg residents) can complete this form to license a dog. Licenses are good for one year and
then need to be renewed.
Failure to license or renew can lead to penalties and court appearance tickets.
Contact the Town Clerk's office or visit the town's website for more information.
SHOOTING SPORTS CLASSES FOR ADULTS:
With support from the Town of Ulysses, Trumansburg Fish & Game Club is offering three classes to
introduce adults (age 16+) to shooting sports and safety involving shotguns and smallbore rifles.
Participants must be in good standing related to State and Federal firearm regulation.
The first 2 classes focused on rifle & shotgun safety and trap. The final class will be on shotgun safety &
skeet and take place at 7pm on October 29.
Because of facility limitations, pre -registration is required. Those interested may register through the
Trumansburg Fish & Game Club's Facebook page, by email at info.tfgc@gmail.com, by calling 607-387-
5433, or in person during public shooting times Thursday evenings (5-8 pm) or Sunday mornings (9am-
12noon).
