As part of that effort, IAED and partners are seeking input from all corners of the county (i.e., what's going well, areas for improvement, etc.). It will remain open for approximately one month. Your input is appreciated! Take the survey HERE. HELP PROTECT NEW YORK'S BAT POPULATIONS DURING BAT WEEK: From DEC Bat Week will take place October 24 through 31 and is an internationally recognized celebration of the important role bats play in our environment. Of the nine bat species found in New York, six are cave bats —meaning they hibernate in caves and mines throughout the winter, while the three tree bat species migrate to warmer areas. Since 2006, cave bats in the state have been devastated by a fungal disease known as White -nose svndrome (WNS). Help protect New York's bat populations by avoiding caves and mines, which may be home to hibernating bats, from November through April. WNS makes bats very sensitive to disturbances during hibernation. Even a single, seemingly quiet visit can kill bats that would otherwise survive the winter. If you see hibernating bats, assume you are doing harm and leave immediately. Anyone entering a listed bat hibernation site from November 1 through April 30 may be subject to prosecution. Other ways you can help bats: • planting a pollinator garden to increase prey availability for bats, who feed on insects; • putting up a bat box on your property to offer bats a summer roost safe from predators and human activity —view options for bat box desiizns and DIY; or • contacting a bat certified Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator (NWCO) when looking to remove bats safely from your home —find a list of Nuisance Wildlife Control Operators in vour area UNDERSTANDING THE 2025 RECOMMENDED TOMPKINS COUNTY BUDGET: The recommended 2025 Tompkins Countv Budget was prepared by the County Administrator and delivered to the Legislature on September 3. The recommended budget totals $252.3M, with revenues made up primarily of local property taxes (levy), sales tax receipts, and State and federal funding. The proposed total property tax levy is 4.34% higher than 2024. If passed, this would result in a $138 increase in the property tax bill for the owner of a median -priced ($300,000) home. As part of this budget development process all departments and funded not -for -profit agencies were asked to submit a budget with a 5% reduction due to cost increases and constraints on available funds for one-time use. For more detail, read the Countv Administrator's 2025 Budget Message.
