View list of Bird Conservation Areas across the state for great bird watching opportunities. With birds on the move, birding sites can change within a few days with different species traveling in and out. Every spring and fall, thousands of raptors migrate, and birders may see or hear eagles, kestrels, sharp - shinned hawks, ospreys, broad -winged hawks, and peregrine falcons, among others. The NYS Birding Trail highlights several hawk watches including Bear Mountain Hawk Watch at Bear Mountain State Park, Hook Mountain Hawk Watch, and Mount Peter Hawkwatch Trailway. It's also important for everyone to turn off the lights for birds at night. DEC launched the 'Lights Out' initiative aimed at keeping non -essential outdoor lighting from affecting the ability of birds to migrate successfully. Many species of shorebirds and songbirds rely on constellations to help them navigate to and from their summer breeding grounds through the State. Excessive outdoor lighting, especially in adverse weather conditions, can cause these migrating birds to become disoriented, a phenomenon known as fatal light attraction. View the latest migration forecasts and maps for birds in your area. DEC ANNOUNCES START OF SMALL GAME HUNTING SEASONS Youth Waterfowl- Saturday, Sept. 28 and 29 Pheasant Season and Pheasant Program Update interactive map of statewide pheasant release sites, approximate timing of stocking, and number of birds stocked Table view of above Ruffed Grouse Hunting- Oct. 1 through the last day of February in most parts of the state. DEC encourages ruffed grouse hunters to take part in the grouse hunting log program and submit feathers from harvested birds to assess recruitment (number of young produced per adult female grouse) for different parts of the state. Interested hunters should visit the DEC website to learn more. Squirrel, Rabbit, and Hare Hunting Squirrels and rabbits can be hunted on many public lands. Squirrel seasons started Sept. 1. Rabbit hunting begins Oct. 1. Hare hunting starts in late fall or early winter. Hunters are encouraged to report their observations to DEC through DEC's website. Furbearer Hunting With 16 species of furbearers in New York, furbearer hunting opportunities are abundant. Coyote hunting season begins Oct. 1 across much of the state and hunting seasons for other furbearers such as bobcat, raccoon, and fox begin Oct. 25. As a reminder, hunters that harvest a bobcat in New York must complete a furbearer possession tag-(PDF), and get the pelt or unskinned animal sealed. DEC is also interested in examining coyotes that exceed 50 pounds as part of an effort to better understand the genetic makeup of these uncommon specimens. Hunters can contact a regional wildlife office or DEC law enforcement (1-844-332-3267) to arrange for DEC to collect a biological sample. Season dates and zone boundaries for all furbearers can be found on DEC's website and in the Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide.
