Check out this week's updates below. IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Town Supervisor Train to be a Severe Weather Spotter Give Feedback on Rock Salt Use TC Budget Forum General Election Info Public Hearings UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON: Greetings, Ulyssians! The temperatures say "summer!" but the leaves on many trees are indicating that fall is settling in. September is my favorite month in the Finger Lakes, and I hope the good weather finds you enjoying outdoor activities. Outside of work, I attend lots of soccer games, back -to -school picnics and playdates, and evening campfires. With the cooler mornings, I often like to slip outside on the weekends and read before the bugs (and children) wake up. I've recently loved an Upstate NY book that others might find interesting, "The God of the Woods." It's a novel set in the Adirondacks with interesting historical linkages to Camp Santanoni, a NYS historical site I had the pleasure of working at one summer. At the Town, we're in the midst of budget season, and our next regular Town Board meeting will be held at 7pm on Tuesday, September 24 at Town Hall. You can access the packet and the Zoom link here. As always, the public is welcome to join us in person or remotely. Wherever this weekend finds you, I hope that you enjoy the light and warmth as we, and all of the animals that share our Ulysses habitat, prepare for darker and colder days ahead. BECOME A SEVERE WEATHER VOLUNTEER SPOTTER: SKYWARN° is a volunteer program established by the National Weather Service (NWS) and partner organizations. The program has trained about 350,000-400,000 people to be severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service. The Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response will partner with Cayuga Health Systems to offer this year's basic Winter SKYWARN class taught by a meteorologist from the NWS Binghamton office. The class will take place on Wednesday, October 2nd from 6:30-8:00pm at Cayuga Medical Center, 101 Dates Drive. Ithaca. For more information on SKYWARN and to register for this free training, go to: https!Ltcgov.co/sky arn WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: Types of Winter Weather Hazards/Storms we get in our region Information the NWS uses to issue warnings How to help your community and the NWS track significant impactful weather - Making storm reports! • How to prepare and stay safe during extreme winter weather Anyone is welcome to attend the Basic SKYWARN classes- there is no age requirement and no prior training is necessary. FEEDBACK ON ROCK SALT USE: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is encouraging participation in a new survey to help better understand typical rock salt use by New Yorkers and raise public awareness regarding the potential environmental and health impacts of salt overuse. Results of the survey will help DEC tailor future outreach and education to help reduce overuse of rock salt on roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. Although applying rock salt on roadways, parking lots, and sidewalks helps to ensure the safety of those traveling by vehicle or foot, overuse of salt can degrade infrastructure and contaminate runoff that enters streams and waterbodies. In 2023, the Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force completed a comprehensive review of rock salt contamination and road salt application best management practices within the Adirondack Park. The findings and recommendations of the Task Force, while originally focused on the Adirondacks, are applicable statewide. The public can submit feedback here until Nov. 1, 2024. DEC is committed to protecting New York's waters and recently pledged up to $15 million to help protect water quality by promoting proper salt storage and application, fulfilling another recommendation of the Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force. The funding is part of up to $215 million in grant funding made available through the Water Quality Improvement Project (WQIP)_program, a competitive, statewide reimbursement grant program that supports implementation projects that directly improve water quality or habitat, promote flood risk reduction, restoration, enhanced flood and climate resiliency, or protect a drinking water source. Visit DEC's Rock Salt Reduction webpage for more information.
