Official announcement
THE GREAT NEW YORK STATE FAIR —THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2
The Great New York State Fair begins next week. Visit the website or follow on Facebook to see the many
things happening!
DEC AND STATE PARKS TO CAMPERS: PLEASE USE LOCAL FIREWOOD:
DEC and New York State Parks encourage campers to use local firewood and follow State firewood regulations
to help prevent the spread of invasive species.
Many people take campfire wood from their backyards or neighborhoods when heading out to a favorite
camping spot, not realizing the untreated wood may be hiding the eggs, larvae, spores, adults, or even seeds of
invasive threats. Hitching a ride on infested or infected firewood allows these pests to spread faster and farther
than they otherwise could have.
Before you go, note that New York State firewood regulations prohibit the following:
• Bringing untreated firewood from other states or countries;
Transporting untreated firewood grown in the state more than 50 miles from its source or origin
Regulations require that people carry source, origin, or treatment documentation whenever transporting
firewood.
• If you transport untreated firewood, it must have a receipt or label that identifies the firewood
source.
• If purchasing and transporting heat -treated firewood, it must have a receipt or label that says, "New
York Approved Heat -Treated Firewood/Pest Free."
Heat -treated firewood may be moved in an unrestricted manner.
COMMENT ON ELECTRIC UTILITY CLIMATE VULNERABILITY STUDY PLANS:
On February 24, 2022, Governor Hochul signed into law an act requiring New York State utility corporations
with combined natural gas and electric services to submit a climate change vulnerability study by September
22, 2023.
The studies, conducted by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation, Consolidated Edison, New York State
Electric and Gas Corporation, Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation, Orange and Rockland Utilities, and
Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation, evaluated each corporation's infrastructure, design specifications, and
procedures to better understand the electric system's vulnerability to climate -driven risks.
The utility companies were further requested to submit a plan to address the results from their climate
vulnerability study. On November 21, 2023, the utilities filed their respective plans with the New York State
Public Service Commission (Commission). The New York State Department of Public Service (DPS) is seeking
public comments regarding the Electric Utility Climate Vulnerability Study Plan.
To ensure full public participation, the Commission will hold a series of in -person public statement hearings
throughout July and August 2024 to seek input and comments from your community regarding the Electric
Utility Climate Vulnerability Study Plans submitted by New York State's major electric utilities.
Information about the filings can be found at www.dps.ny.gov
Comments due by 8/30/24 via mail, email, or by phone- details at Notice of Public Statement Hearings
