UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR:
Greetings, Ulyssians!
Lots of activities happened in Ulysses in the last couple of weeks, so lots of thanks to share.
Fri, May 10, 2024 at 4:31 PM
Special thanks to all of the members of the Civics Internship Program (grades 9-12), Comprehensive Plan Steering
Committee members, Conservation and Sustainability Committee members, Tree Advisory Committee members for
all of their work at the Tru-Ulysses Earth Day events and Arbor Day events. From planting trees, organizing litter pickup,
promoting electric vehicle options, conducting focus groups in social studies/government classes, collecting opinions on
Ulysses for our comprehensive plan update, (and more!) we are grateful for everyone's collective energy and
enthusiasm. Some may say "it takes a village ....... but in this case, "it takes a town!"
Additionally, I'd like to extend a special thanks to the Rotary Club for their April 27th chicken BBQ, where funds raised
were in support of the Trumansburg/Ulysses youth services program, managed by the Town. We are so grateful for
everyone who cooked, served and ate!
Next Tuesday (May 14, 7pm) also brings our regular meeting of the Town Board. As always, members of the public are
welcome to attend in person, via Zoom, or catch up on the meeting afterwards on YouTube. The board packet, as well
as the link to join the meeting, is available here.
As a reminder, we'll be holding a public hearing (see below) at the beginning of the meeting to hear thoughts on the
Town's consideration on consolidating the Justice Court from 2 justices down to 1. This is being considered because of
declining workload since 2019, declining revenues, and because the CAP Court now handles all off -hour arraignments.
Previously Justices needed to be on -call 24/7 to handle arraignments and other court matters in the Ulysses Court.
Thanks to the advocacy of many, including former Town Supervisor Elizabeth Thomas, the CAP Court (not paid for by
the Town) has significantly improved efficiency and reduces the workload for Town justices, as well as sped up the
judicial process for defendants.
The Town Board appreciates hearing from the public, and encourages everyone to participate in the public hearing. You
can find the link to information about the workload in Ulysses vs. Newfield and Enfield (who have each only 1 justice)
and declining revenue, as well as other information, here. Comments for the public hearing can be submitted in person
or by letter to the Town Clerk at clerk@townofulyssesny.gov.
HABITAT NATURE PRESERVE WALK:
In 2018, the Town of Ulysses acquired 30 acres of secondary growth forest off of Salo Drive, Trumansburg now known
as the Habitat Nature Preserve. This site has a mixture of native and invasive plants, diverse trees, and multiple
fungal communities which several bird, mammal and reptile species call home.
Join naturalists Marc Devokaitis and Marvin Pritts from 1-2:30pm on Sunday, May 19 for an exploration of this ever -
changing habitat and learn to identify some of the species that exist in our town.
Park at the farmer's market and walk to the trail head at 23 Salo Drive, Trumansburg NY 14886.
Please RSVP to clerk@townofulyssesny.gov.
PUBLIC HEARING ON CONSOLIDATION OF COURT JUSTICES:
At a regular meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Ulysses held at Town Hall, 10 Elm St., Trumansburg, New
York, on the 23rd day of April, 2024, a resolution was passed scheduling a public hearing on the reduction of the
number of Town Court Justices from two to one.
The Public Hearing will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at the Town Hall at 10 Elm St., Trumansburg NY
14886 as well as via Zoom videoconference at https://zoom.us/j/183862745 (by telephone at +1-646-558-8656,
183862745#).
Please take further notice that at the aforementioned time and place, all interested residents (or their
agents/representatives) will be afforded an opportunity to submit written and/or oral comments. Comments may also
be sent in advance to the Town Clerk at 10 Elm St., Trumansburg NY 14886 or via e-mail to
clerk@townofulyssesny.gov by 5pm on May 14, 2024.

MY GARDEN OF A THOUSAND BEES- MOVIE NIGHT
Join the Town of Ulysses Bee Friendly Community Committee for a special documentary film screening called My
Garden of a Thousand Bees on Monday, May 20 at 7pm at the Ulysses Library.
About the film: Locked down during the coronavirus pandemic, acclaimed wildlife filmmaker Martin Dohrn set out to
record all the bee species in his tiny urban garden in Bristol, England. Filming with one -of -a -kind lenses he forged at his
kitchen table, he cataloged more than 60 different species, from Britain's largest bumblebees to scissor bees the size of
mosquitoes. He eventually got so close to the bees he could identify individuals by sight, documenting life at their level
as we have never seen it before.
