IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Town Supervisor Help Create a Vision for the Town's Future Free Well Testing Community Forum Caregiver Workshop Library Booksale 2024 Road Projects NYS Park Passes for Disabled Vets Highway Expenditure Subject to Permissive Referendum Informal Assessment Appeals Due 4/12 UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR: Greetings, Ulyssians! Just hopping into your mailbox with a quick reminder that we have our regular Town Board meeting on Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm. You can find the full board packet available here. Members of the public are always welcome to attend in person or remotely. As pathways of our solar bodies come into alignment on Monday, I hope you take the opportunity to enjoy this celestial marvel. I experienced my first total eclipse in 2017, fully aware of the scientific process. It was incredible! Can you imagine how our ancestors hundreds or thousands of years felt in those moments, how exhilarated or thrilled or frightened they must have been to witness such a (to them) unexplainable event? Wherever the sun and moon find you on Monday, I wish you good viewing! SHARE YOUR VISION FOR THE TOWN'S FUTURE: The Town has begun the process of updating its Comprehensive Plan. Comp plans are most successful when citizens from all aspects of the town are represented. The next meeting is Thursdav, April 11 at 5:30pm Get involved in one the following ways: Visit the comp plan page • Join the comp plan listsery • Share your thouqhts & dreams • Submit your photos of the Town in Spring FREE WELL TESTING: Is your main source of drinking water a well? Are you concerned about potential contaminants? The NYS Department of Health (DOH) is assisting the New York Rural Water Association (NYRWA) and the Ulysses Water Source Protection Plan Committee in developing a Source Water Protection Plan for the Town. In support of this, the DOH will be doing a limited number of well tests for a suite of water quality parameters. We need volunteers who are Ulysses residents not connected to municipal water to have their well tested (no charge to the homeowner). Interested in participating? Please send your name, address, and preferred email contact to private.wells()health.ny gov by April 22. The DOH will be scheduling a limited number of tests, over the course of 2- 3 days in early -to -mid May. The goal is a good representative sampling of drinking water wells Town -wide. Unfortunately, although we appreciate all who volunteer to participate, not everyone will be able to, due to limited resources. Ideal sampling locations will allow access inside the house. Homeowners will receive a report and explanation of the results. Individual household results will remain confidential with the DOH. The Town will receive a summary report of the findings without any location identifier. This data helps the Town and NYS to understand potential health concerns that may be present in drinking water wells and to focus on developing solutions in Ulysses. COMMUNITY FORUM: AN ALZHEIMER'S FILM When I Leave Your Mind, a film by Ithaca College students, will be shown at 7pm on Tuesday, April 9 in the Fellowship Hall at 69 E Main St. The film is an artistic portrayal of Alzheimer's through the eyes of Jackson, an affected man. Throughout the story, he attempts to hold on to a dear memory of his wife, Sylvia, as it slowly crumbles to pieces in front of his eyes. TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS CLASS: Caring for someone with a chronic illness such as dementia, Parkinson's disease, stroke, or cancer can be stressful physically, emotionally, and financially. Tompkins County Office for the Aging will hold workshops for caregivers. Powerful Tools for Caregivers (PTC) is an interactive, evidence -based course designed to equip caregivers with the tools they need to balance caregiving with self -care. FREE ADMISSION TO STATE PARKS FOR NEW YORK STATE VETERANS AND FAMILIES The Governor announced that beginning on April 1, New York State veterans and Gold Star Families will have free access to New York State parks, campgrounds, day use areas, historic sites, and recreation areas through the expansion of the Lifetime Liberty Pass Program. The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has created a website to guide veterans and families through eligibility questions, the application process and more. Once issued, the Lifetime Liberty Pass will never expire.
