WE WANT TO KNOW! The Town of Ulysses is encouraging everyone residing outside the Village of Trumansburg to take the survey (linked below) to describe where they get their water from, any problems with its quantity or quality, and concerns about maintaining your water supply in the future. The information will be a critical element in developing a comprehensive Water Source Protection Plan that will guide the town's actions to protect drinking water resources throughout Ulysses in the coming years and offer steps homeowners can take to improve their drinking water quality. A generalized summary of the Survey results will be presented at a workshop in 2024. The online survey is located at https://arcg.is/1 D01TT0. Paper copies of the survey are also available at the Town Hall. Responses are requested by January 21, 2024. Thank you to all the town residents who have already taken the time to complete it. Strategies for supporting your mental health: Pay attention to your feelings • Remember that it is okay to feel unhappy during the holidays. Recognizing your feelings is the first step to addressing and nurturing them. Develop a plan for when you are feeling stressed, sad, or lonely • This plan may include calling a friend or family member, going for a walk, engaging in an activity that brings joy, or watching a favorite movie. Having a plan ahead of time can help ensure the difficult moments are more manageable. Practice self -care • It is important to schedule time for yourself and activities that recharge your mind and body. This may include reading a good book, working out, spending time in nature, and practicing stress management skills, such as deep breathing, meditation, and mindfulness. It is also important to remember to prioritize necessities, including eating a balanced diet, getting plenty of sleep, and finding time for exercise. Connect with community • If you can't be near loved ones during the holidays, finding a supportive community through clubs, support groups, community centers, local meetups, and faith communities can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. Consider scheduling a regular phone call with family and friends as well. Support others • During this time of year feelings of grief and loss can amplify. Check in on loved ones who may be alone or struggling during the holiday season. Helping a friend or neighbor not only gives joy to others, but it can improve your own happiness and well-being. Recognize seasonal mood changes • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a condition in which people experience symptoms of depression that are triggered by the change in seasons as the days get shorter. While this form of depression often improves in the spring and summer, it is important to talk with your health care provider if you feel you are experiencing these symptoms. Treatment is effective and may include light therapy, antidepressant medication, and/or talk therapy. Avoid alcohol and drugs • For people in recovery, the holiday season presents challenges that can trigger the use of alcohol and drugs. Having a plan for navigating social events and feelings of loneliness, can reduce the risk of substance use. For family and friends, it is important to check in on those who may be struggling with substance use over the holidays. The event is free and open to the public. Details: Sat. 12/16, 1pm at the Ulysses Philomathic Library, 74 E. Main St., Trumansburg NY 14886 Press Release from The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF): The American chestnut once dominated portions of the eastern U.S. forests, from Maine to Mississippi. Numbering in the billions, the tree was one of the tallest and fastest growing in those regions. Pollinators depended on the flowers, and wildlife, livestock, and people relied on its nutritious nut. Tall and fast-growing, the tree's wood was rot -resistant and straight -grained, making it an excellent source of lumber. In the late 1800s a deadly blight, Cryphonectria parasitica, was inadvertently imported to the U.S. from Asia as global horticultural trade increased. The American chestnut had no resistance and in fewer than 50 years the fungus had eliminated it as a mature forest tree, rendering it functionally extinct. TACF has been resolutely working for 40 years to restore this majestic tree, developing invaluable partnerships and utilizing the latest scientific advancements. This new documentary film showcases the unwavering commitment of staff, scientists, and volunteers who are determined to save the tree. "We are thrilled to share this film with the world," said Lisa Thompson, former President & CEO. "It tells the story of the American chestnut and the people who are working hard to bring it back to our forests. We hope that it will inspire others to join us in our mission to restore this iconic tree species." CLEAR DAY THUNDER: Rescuing the American Chestnut, features interviews with scientists, volunteers, and luminaries. Best-selling author Barbara Kingsolver, Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, country music legend Dolly Parton, and former President Jimmy Carter are just a few of the well-known figures committed to this historic conservation effort.
