Have a great weekend. IN THIS WEEK'S ULYSSES NEWSLETTER: Update from Supervisor Olson Special Election Winterfest COVID-19 Vaccinations Urged Facebook page UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR OLSON: Greetings, Ulyssians! As we collectively welcome December, I encourage you to enjoy Winterfest on Saturday, December 2 in downtown Trumansburg from 3-6pm. The Town is a proud sponsor, and please be sure to stop by our table. High school students involved in our Civic Internship program will be collecting everyone's favorite things about Ulysses to share with our Comprehensive Plan Committee. Next Wednesday, December 6, the voters will have the opportunity to determine whether the Town should purchase 30 acres at $7000/acre for recreational development, which would be designed through a community engagement process. Registered voters are welcome to vote at either the Village Hall or the Racker Center between 11am and 8pm. More information is available here. On November 30, 1 appreciated having a conversation with GrassRoots board member Lissa Farrell, GrassRoots volunteer Alan Vogel, Trumansburg Community Recreation President Todd Edmonds, and Town Board Member Liz Weatherby. Thank you to all for your love of and dedication to Ulysses! It was a lovely, very early conversation on how the three entities, along with other stakeholders like the Village of Trumansburg, the Trumansburg Central School District, and Tompkins County could work together on a long-term effort to explore a potential collaboration to address community needs, such as a community center along Falls Road. In an effort to clear up any misunderstandings floating around in the community, the Town does not have a firm proposal for alternative recreation space from GrassRoots or any other property owner in the Town of Ulysses. There is no defined parcel, no subdivision, no fixed size/amount of land, and no firm estimation of price, although price ranges of up to $22,000/acre were floated in the conversation. Water and sewer are not currently available to property along Falls Road. What the community does have is a choice next Wednesday about whether or not to spend federal grant funds to expand recreational opportunities and open space in Ulysses, an objective of our current Comprehensive Plan. The Village of Trumansburg Trustees recently engaged in thoughtful, public dialogue and their unanimous support for the recreation land purchase reflects many of the factors that contributed to the Town Board initiating the purchase, subject to referendum, in June 2023. If the community votes yes next Wednesday, the Town will proceed with a community -driven design process to create a space that serves the needs of our community as an investment in our present and our future. We will strive to make it an asset to the surrounding neighborhood and the Town as a whole. If the community votes no next Wednesday, the Town will respect that outcome, and encourage everyone to participate in our ongoing Comprehensive Plan update. If the current Comprehensive Plan objectives no longer reflect the wishes of the public, then it is the Town's duty to gather more information and thoughtfully listen rather than attempting to force everyone to go through another intensive special election process on a different piece of land in an even shorter time frame. (Given the low threshold of signatures needed to trigger a special election, it's reasonable to expect any land purchase by the Town will go through a similar process.) While recreational needs may be further identified and prioritized in planning documents and many conversations will hopefully continue with local stakeholders, the federal funds that make next Wednesday's potential purchase possible cannot be put on hold for the 2025-2045 Comprehensive Plan update process to unfold. The funds will have to be allocated by the Town Board in 2024 through our regular budgeting process to other identified needs in Ulysses, as we are committed to not returning them, unspent, to the federal government. Again, I extend my thanks to the hundreds of community members who have been working for decades to increase free, publicly accessible spaces in Ulysses, and to those who gathered just yesterday to discuss how long-term collaboration and conversation can achieve amazing results. Just look at Camp Barton, 2.5 years in the making as a soon -to -be NY State Park! Together we can do great things for Ulysses! Those most at risk for severity of illness include pregnant persons and infants who are not old enough to be vaccinated, as well as older adults and those with chronic health conditions. With the updated COVID-19 vaccine now more widely available at local pharmacies and healthcare locations, now is the time to seek vaccination if you have not already done so. It is essential to seek vaccination at the start of respiratory illness season to reduce severity of illness and reduce risk of hospitalization and death. To schedule an appointment to be vaccinated, call your primary care provider or schedule with a local pharmacy. You can also use the website www.vaccines.gov to find a location near you. If you need assistance in scheduling an appointment online, dial 2-1-1 to speak with the helpline. The new COVID-19 vaccine is available at our on -site immunization clinics for children and adults who are eligible for the state funded Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Vaccines for Adults (VFA) programs. To check your eligibility or to schedule an appointment time, call TCWH Community Health Services at 607-274-6604.
