NATIONWIDE EMERGENCY ALERT PLANNED FOR OCTOBER 4TH
Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response, in conjuncon with FEMA and the FCC will
conduct a naonwide emergency alert test next week.
The naonal test will consist of two porons, tesng Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency
Alert System (EAS) capabilies. Both tests are scheduled to begin at around 2:20pm on Wednesday,
October 4th.
The WEA poron of the test will be directed to all consumer cell phones. The test message will display in
either English or in Spanish, depending on the language sengs of the wireless handset. The EAS
poron of the test will be sent to radios and televisions.
All wireless phones should receive the message only once. The message will read: “THIS IS A TEST of the
Naonal Wireless Emergency Alert System. No acon is needed.”
The EAS poron of the test is scheduled to last approximately one minute and will be conducted with
the parcipaon of radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television
providers and wireline video providers. The test message will state: “This is a naonwide test of the
Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This is only a test. No
acon is required by the public.”
The purpose of the October 4th test is to ensure that the systems connue to be effecve means of
warning the public about emergencies, parcularly those on the naonal level.
“It is hoped that by geng the word out in advance, it will help to minimize any confusion when the
naonwide test is conducted,” said Geoff Dunn, Community Preparedness Coordinator for Tompkins
County Emergency Response. “Again, no acon is required by the public.”

Join naturalists Marc Devokais and Marvin Pris from 9-10:30am on Saturday, Oct. 14 for an
exploraon of this ever-changing habitat and learn to idenfy some of the species that exist in our town.
Park at the farmer's market and walk to the trail head at 23 Salo Drive, Trumansburg NY 14886.
