UPDATE FROM TOWN SUPERVISOR KATELIN OLSON:
Aer many years in school, my professional me in educaon, and having my own children, September
always feels more like the start of a new year than January. Fresh pencils and unused notebooks shine
with possibility.
I know I'm not alone in this feeling! About 25% of our Ulysses populaon is in the school-age range,
whether they're enjoying snacks in nursery school, exploring our community through homeschooling or
a private school, praccing their cung skills in pre-k, already contemplang what amazing play will be
selected for the elementary school, using a locker for the first me in middle school, gathering under the
lights for the first varsity games in high school, or exploring degree opons in college or a technical
program. Approximately 2/3 of our under-18 populaon live in the Trumansburg Central School District,
with 1/3 in the Ithaca City School District.
Collecvely our youth reflect our hope for the future, and I wish them, their families and caregivers, and
all educators a joyful start to this season!
I'd also like to extend a special thanks to the Trumansburg Central School District, especially
Superintendent Kimberly Bell, the TCSD School Board, Middle School Principal Jean Amodeo, Coach
Beam, and everyone in facilies for supporng youth and adult recreaon and enrichment. We filled up
all available space with our Trumansburg/Ulysses Summer Camp, serving 84 kiddos per week with
affordable child care!
With school resumed, the TCSD fields are already very crowded with all of the school sports teams, and
we are grateful for your willingness to share their limited space with the Trumansburg/Ulysses
Recreaon Program and all of the incredible private organizaons supporng youth recreaon and
acvies.

Kudos to the various organizaons, their volunteers, and their youth for making due with less space than
they need, and thank you to the coaches and families ensuring children, regardless of a household's
finances, can arrange transportaon to facilies outside the Town (somemes hours away) because of
limited field or recreaonal space in Ulysses. Your commitment to serving youth is commendable and
truly appreciated!
At the Town, we're in full budget planning swing, as September is our month to lean in to prudent
financial planning. (This is where my sharp pencils and fresh notebooks are put to work!) We have many
meengs scheduled over the coming month, and the public is encouraged to join as you're able. Please
check our meeng schedule here, where links to agendas and other informaon will be posted as it
becomes available. Our next special meeng is 9am on Tuesday, September 12, with our regular meeng
following at 7pm.

FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY GROUPS (Deadline today):
The Town of Ulysses has limited funding for community organizaons who offer services that contribute
to the health, safety and welfare of town cizens. Groups that have been funded in the past have
provided senior services, arts programs, recreaon and more. Historically, organizaons typically request
between $500 and $5,000.
View the applicaon and more informaon at https://townofulyssesny.gov/pages/current-
issues/233/funding-for-community-groups-application/
The deadline to apply for funding is September 8, 2023 at 3pm. Please note that funding is not

AGRICULTURAL DISTRICT REVIEW BEGINS:
From Cornell Cooperave Extension:
The purpose of Agricultural Districts is to encourage the connued use of farmland for agricultural
producon. The program is a combinaon of incenves and protecons to forestall conversion of
farmland to non-agricultural uses. These benefits are: preferenal real property tax treatment
(agricultural assessment and special benefit assessment) and protecons against unreasonably
restricve local laws, government-funded acquision, construcon projects, and private nuisance suits
involving agricultural pracces.
Tompkins County has begun the 8-year review of NYS Cerfied Agricultural
District #2, including land in the Towns of Newfield, Enfield, Ulysses and parts of Ithaca and
Danby (approximately 67,100 acres). A map of the district is available at https://bit.ly/ag-district-map
Municipalies and land owners within the district may propose a modificaon of the
district by filing such proposal with the County Clerk of the County Legislature by October 10,
2023. For quesons about the review process, or more informaon, contact
