These buerflies are the great-great-grandchildren of the monarchs that migrated to Mexico last fall.     You can help monarchs by providing food (nectar) and keeping those areas protected:  Turn a poron of your lawn into a wildflower meadow—plant milkweed or other nave wildflowers.   Delay mowing areas with milkweed unl later in the fall.  Avoid using herbicides—they kill all life-stages of monarchs (egg, caterpillar, pupa, and adult).  Report sightings of adults online. View a map of the sightings so far this year.  Don’t know when their migraon peaks in your area? Check out this chart.   Chrysalis Stage Have you seen a small green pod about an inch-long? This is a monarch caterpillar aer it enters the pupa stage and is now in a chrysalis. If you see one, try not to disturb it. They will find a safe place— oen under a milkweed leaf—to enter this stage in their development, which lasts about 9-14 days. Somemes they will pupate hanging under eaves, decks, other garden plants, or even on window screens! WATER PROTECTION IN ULYSSES To help protect the quality and quanty of drinking water for Ulysses residents and businesses and to plan for future needs and funding opportunies, the Town has organized a Water Source Protecon Plan Commiee (WSPPC). The commiee is tasked with developing a Drinking Water Source Protecon Plan for the Town (outside of the Village). In support of this goal, the WSPPC will conduct a town-wide survey to compile informaon and idenfy potenal threats to water quality and quanty. Look for the survey in late September. Public engagement is a key piece of this project. Join the Ulysses Town Board meeng at 7pm on 9/26 for an overview of the project. This law also covers other items likely to pose a hazard to motorists, including glass, nails, wire, cans, etc. Fines for a first offense include up to a $150 fine and/or 15 days in jail, plus applicable surcharges. This law also spulates that anyone that places or permits to be placed upon any highway any material which interferes with the safe use of the highway shall immediately remove the same or cause it to be removed.
