HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This structure appears to be one of the oldest within the Village. The abstract in the possession of the owner refers to the building as a"stone- house" built by David.- Trembley in 1828. Abner Treman was the first owner, selling the land as part` of a, larger parcel to Hermon Camp. During the anti -Masonic movement in N.Y.S. (1820°s-1840's), secret meeting of the organization were held in the top story of the structure, the membership composed of 1.2 persons. During this time, the Trumansburg chapter did not fold, unlike others in the state. The properties of 164 and 66 U. Main St. seem to have been in common own- ership for much of their history. In 1855, Lewis Rigg sold the properties to Daniel Elmore. hater, Emmons Williams sold them to Cornell U, (1894) and the strvci`ures housed workers of the Willard, N.Y. property owned by Cornell. Cornell sold the land and buildings to Orlando Newell, :father-in-law of the present owner, on Nov. 1.5, 1900. During the early 20th century, the structure has served. as "Newell's Tourist Home.' 21. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This structure was built.to serve as the H.D. Barto and Company Bank, the first building within Trumansburg created specifically for banking. The site of the bank has a long history of use. Albert Crandall of Owego moved to Trumansburg in 1806 and 2 years later "erected a building on the lot between the H.D. Barto and Co, bank and the residence of J.D. B-outon (Feltz house); subsequently there was built an addition which coverer the site of the present bank building."l This addition was built "for a Mr. Hollenbech of Owego who in connection with Mr. Crandall opened a gen- eral store in one part and Mr. Crandall used the other as a tavern o2 There was also a barn at the present corner of Elm and Main Streets that 21. Between 1845-1850, the entire property was sold to Hermon Camp and the buildings were torn down. On April 12, 1864, Camp sold the land to H.D. Barto for f900.00 for use by the H,D, Garin nnd Cnmpory Rsnk, The bank was organized in 061 by Henry Barto as president and George E. Spink as cashier. "Business wasopened in a building that was destroyed by fire"3 (Feb. ??, 180) and a new brick bank was erected that year. Barto died in December 16?0 and a will dated 186P left the bank and the property to hAs widow, provided she did not remarry, Several years latery Kate Barto became Kate Delano and the bank was conveyed to one of the four sons of the first marriage. Fred D, on June 9, 1879. Fred D. served as the cashier and Henry L. Hinckley as the president in 18?9 and the bank boasted R capital of $50,000.00. Fred Barto's widow, "Ila, conveved the property to Albert F. Allen in Nov. 1907. In December 1939, Allen's widow sold the property to the Spencer Co-op 6ociety, Inc. The building was used as the Co-op's food store for the next few decades. According to local residents, the local newspaper, the Free Press, was located in the former bank building c. 1900-1930 but apparently leased space. On April 11, 1 961 , the Spencer Co-op sold the property to the Tompkins, Schuyler, hoga Counties Patronos fire Relief Association. With a name change to the Yinger Lakes Co-op in 1963, the insurance company continues to occupy the structure to the present time. The insurance company began as the Tompkins Company fire Relief Association, the first such insurance company organized by the New York StaLaayaqge, within the state, it aqqcars that the first story has always been used for public or commercial uses. The upper stories have been used for storage most recently, however, local organizations have used the third story as a meeting hall. One such organization was the Gregg Hose Wompany, a volunteer fire company organized c. 1880. This structure is distinctive for its decorative treatment on all four sides. The fine quality of detail was seen,ai°tost appropriate to a building as important to a community as a bank. The structure is a local landmark, standing in ;cod repair, and is worthy of preservation.
