OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES OF BUILDING AND SITE (including interior features if known): Decorative window treatments round -headed arched windows with key- stone and spring stones (same as those seen at Y47-51 E. Main St.) corbelled cornice line, one section of the block features the cast iron front by Cheny, Roches- ter, N.Y., also seen at #47-55 E. Main St. The side, stair on the Farrel -Messier office has the original metal brackets beneath. SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: after 180 fire, a. 1865. ARCHITECT: BUILDER: 20. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: Like the other buildings along Main St., the predecessor to this block was destroyed in the !864 fire that extended from Union St. to the PresbAeriar Church. Rebuilding of the damaged area began im,ediately. Perhaps the earliest use of the site was by Scheneck"s Tavern c. 1810; later the establishment changed to Bond.®s Hotel. Farrel-I''essler has occupied the same storefront Q,9) since 1906. Previ- ous to that, 2 sepeTate insurance companies occupied the space. It is taller, slightly out of scale with its neighboring buildings as it is a showier, more im-oressive structure. 18. OTHER NOTABLE FEATURES OF BUILDING AND SITE (including interior features if known): tall arched_ windows; round -headed on third, segmental on second, with bracketed window lintles-appear to be cast-iron, cast iron front with arched show windows, paneled pilasters with daisy patterned capitals. the first story cornice is bracketed, third story cornice features dentils and small "houses" above the corbelled end brackets. SIGNIFICANCE 19. DATE OF INITIAL CONSTRUCTION: after Ma.y 5, 1871 fire, c. 1871-1872 ARCHITFCT- BUILDER: 20. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This structure is an excellent local example of the Commercial Italianate style with its very showy and lovely brick work and cast iron. facade. The third story paneled cornice is especially notable. The building retains the original 2/2 wooden double -hung sashes. Below 'the front first story windows there is a decorative "gothic" (quatrefoil) grill- work; this same .grill pattern appears at the Rongovian. -Lhe rear facade has simpler decorative feature; all 3 stories have round headed arched windows, the first story has 4/4 double hung sashes. F.B. Stone bought of W.J. Stone the :ast half of a lot and "built... the store now (1890) occupied by C. L. Ciapman"1 Mrs. Tunison recalls the C. L. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This handsome Commercial Italianate style building is notable for its attractive details and original cast iron front. The structure is reputed to have been built of brick brought in from the Seneca Falls- Waterloo,'N.Y. area as Trumansburg never produced any great quantity of brick. Between 1940-1950, the first story was occupied by Smith's nropane gas company. 21. HISTORICAL AND ARCHITECTURAL IMPORTANCE: This structure formerly housed .the:�Bl ggs'-Co.,, the leading store of the Village and well known outside of the area. The enterprise began as Biggs' hardware store, founded in 1885 by David S. Biggs., A fire in 1896 destroyed the original store on Main St. and tale business was moved to nearby commercial sn�ce (the BSlummer and Collins blocks) until 1012. In 1900, the company was incorporated a-s the_?3iggs' Company. The present structure was erected between 1911 and 1912. On Feb. 9, 1912, a gala banquet was thrown by the Trtimansburg Businessmen's Association on the second floor of the BigT-s` building for 300-400 guests. phis event marked the completion and opening of the store. During the -t9401s, the Red and White grocery store was located in the middle section of the block and Pot -leis Restaurant was replaced by Durl ing' s Restaurant.
