Trembly took a great interest in this project and it is reputed that "every_stonn qrd briak was layed under the pqrsonal supervision of the owner,"! The investment cost Trembly about Q"0,000.00 bRt the building was A _) declaired as success upon its completion® "His buildingi"when-nowuletvd-1 was one of the finest for the purpose in the county."2 Ten year; later (Nov. 1881), Charles :Ayer became the building's owner, who leased it to James H. Borman and chamgcd its name to the "Cornell House a" Plyer sold the business to a Mr. Kennedy of Now York Gity who put a local man, D.P. Peters, in charge of his affairs. This venture was a failure and Kennedy was forced -to close the hotel and mortgage it for 15,000 to a group Of Ithacan" Until 1886, the hotel stood vacant, except for a brief period under the tenantby of J.H. Covert. The structure was sold later to "Mrs. M.J. Bowman for less than 2 its original price."3 The hotel closed its doors finally in 1913 when it became the home of the local lodge of the Masonic Temple. Library History: The first local library was founded in June, tell in Michael SnellOs tavern by Hermon Camp® Camp served as the first librarian and the books were kept in his store until 1836, when the libary disbanded. All the books were sold four years later. Nearly a century later (1935) a second library was organized and opened October 12, 1935 in the hotel structure, Space was deed to the library by the Masons in April 1941. The structure is U-sham in plan with the rear of the main block (north), tKC Wcst and --crt" onnotps typo th" fvn"t. These less public sides feature round -headed arched windows, cast iron sills and several windows retain louvered wooden shutters. The U-shaped plan creates a semi -enclosed courtyard containing benches. The south wall of the library section of the building bears a plaque with the following inscription: "This library courtyard was given to bring enjoyment to those who enter® Designed by Charles Dunlap, L.A., constructed by Harold Voorheis, given by Lydia Sears,'' The use of cast iron elements, particularly, the balustrade and balconies, arc of note and worthy of preservatim, The building presently houses the Masonic Temple, and Ulysses Philomathic Library and the Ulysses Historical Society. Aninterestingnote concerning local history is that the first telephone booth within the Village of Trvmansburg was located in the lobby of the -souse "Cornell 0?
