Ulysses Agricultural Zoning Session When: 5:00-6:30 PM, Thursday, April 14, 2016 Where: Ulysses Town Hall, 10 Elm St, Trumansburg Do the current Ulysses Zoning regulations benefit or burden farmers and farmland owners? What changes would YOU recommend to improve the zoning? In 2009, Ulysses adopted a Comprehensive Plan and in 2013, Ulysses adopted an Agriculture and Farmland Protection Plan. These two planning documents guide policy changes for the Town, and the current zoning update project works to bring the zoning in line with these plans. The project locations are: South Street, Lake Street, Route 96/Main Street When: April 21st 6:30pm Meeting Location: Trumansburg Fire Hall The Village of Trumansburg, in conjunction with the Town of Ulysses, is excited to announce the continuing advancement of the Pedestrian Commuting in Trumansburg: Safe Routes to School Project. The entire community is invited to attend the upcoming public information session on April 21st at 6:30pm at the Trumansburg Fire Hall. The preliminary design for each section of the sidewalk project will be presented by the design consulting team of Fisher Associates, Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects, and Prudent Engineering. This will serve as another opportunity for residents to provide input and to learn about the design. Anyone and everyone are welcomed to attend. The Consulting Team of Fisher Associates, Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects, and Prudent Engineering has been selected to complete the design for this project. If you own farmland or rural, relatively undeveloped land and have ever thought about protecting it, consider attending one of the two upcoming Conservation Workshops hosted by the Tompkins County Department of Planning. • Farmland Protection Grant Program: County Planner Scott Doyle and Elizabeth Newbold, land protection specialist of the Finger Lakes Land Trust, will provide information for farmers about the state’s farmland protection grant program on Tuesday, April 12 at 7pm in the Borg Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library • Charitable Land Conservation Options Andy Zepp and Kris West of the Finger Lakes Land Trust will provide information about charitable land conservation options and their new, enhanced, tax incentives on Wednesday, May 11 at 7pm in the Borg Warner Room of the Tompkins County Public Library. Conservation easements will be the focus of both meetings. These legal agreements permanently protect land by limiting future development while also maintaining the vitality of our community by keeping the land in private ownership, available for sustainable land management and on the tax rolls. Provided certain IRS criteria are met, conservation easement donors can be eligible for both a federal income tax deduction and a New York State income tax credit. For more information come to the workshop that fits your situation or go to: fllt.org/easement In addition to protecting productive farmland and wooded properties that help protect Cayuga Lake’s water quality, the Land Trust is interested in engaging people who own undeveloped or large rural parcels next to the Black Diamond Trail. If you can’t attend a workshop but are interested in more information, please contact the Land Trust at 607-275-9487. Phosphorus ban in lawn fertilizer and dishwasher detergent- Look for the “0” When Buying DEC reminds New Yorkers of the state law that limits the use of lawn fertilizers that contain phosphorus. The law also prohibits the application of lawn fertilizer before April 1st. Before buying, check the fertilizer bag for a set of three numbers showing the percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Buy a bag with a “0” in the middle, indicating that there is no phosphorus in that product. Visit DEC’s Dishwasher Detergent and Nutrient Runoff Law webpage for a full description of the law and its requirements. The law does not affect agricultural fertilizer or fertilizer for gardens.
