The Town of Ulysses will hold a Special Town Board meeting to conduct a Public Information Session on
Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 7:00 PM at the Ulysses Town Hall at 10 Elm Street to talk with residents and
decide whether to purchase three properties in Jacksonville from Exxon Mobil.
The Town’s 2009 Comprehensive Plan included the goals of historic preservation and revitalization of
Jacksonville. The Town learned in 2013 that Exxon Mobil was interested in selling the properties it
purchased in the late 1980s as part of the state-approved plan to clean up contamination resulting from a
Mobil Oil gasoline spill that occurred in the late 1970s. Since the properties include an historic building listed
on the Town’s Inventory of Historic Buildings, this represents an opportunity for the Town to acquire this
unique 1827 structure. After conducting a number of tests on the sites to determine that the parcels are safe
to re-develop with some restrictions, the Town entered into negotiations with Exxon Mobil to buy three of the
seven properties for sale.
The Town Board is holding this Public Information Session on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 to outline the terms
and conditions of the proposed sale and to answer questions from residents about potential future uses of
the properties. Residents unable to attend may submit questions or comments to the Ulysses Town Clerk no
later than 12 noon on April 18th. After discussion with the public, the Town Board will review any potential
environmental impacts resulting from the sale and then will discuss and may vote on a resolution to
authorize the purchase at this meeting. The meeting and any vote to proceed is contingent on Exxon Mobil’s
final approval of the negotiated contracts, which the Town expects to be forthcoming.
Background information on the properties, the spill and clean-up activities, and the most recent
environmental studies are available in the Current Issues section of the Town of Ulysses website
www.ulysses.ny.us and at the Town Clerk’s office at 10 Elm Street, Trumansburg, NY. For more information,
contact Deputy Town Supervisor, Nancy Zahler at zahler@ulysses.ny.us or 607-279-4792.
