Jeff,
I would like to request the following information under FOIL:
Copies of case files for all crimes classified as larceny or theft that occurred in April, June, and September 1971
from the police department. Specifically, I am interested in the dollar value recorded for stolen property for
each case.
Also, to further clarify, I am referring to crimes classified as larceny or theft based on FBI Uniform Crime Report
definitions. So, I am interested in pocket-picking, shoplifting, purse snatching, and all other types of theft or
larceny (from motor vehicles, from buildings, of bicycles, etc.); I am not interested in other crimes classified as
burglary or robbery. I am a student at the University of Illinois at Chicago working with a professor
at Northwestern University studying measured trends in thefts during the 60's and 70's and am trying to
supplement publicly available FBI data with more detailed administrative data. I understand the request may be
somewhat lengthy, but such information would be very helpful for my research, and I am willing to modify the
request based on how your records are kept to make the request less burdensome, if necessary. I look forward
to hearing from you.
